Temp workers’ wages up across three major Japanese metros

The average hourly wage in January 2024 for temporary workers across three Japanese major metropolitan areas (Kanto, Tokai and Kansai) stood at JPY 1,565 (USD 10.64), up JPY 13 (USD 0.09) from the previous year and no change from the previous month, according to data from Dip Corp. (2379:TYO), a staffing firm and job board operator based in Tokyo.

The data was based on the job advertisement data for temporary workers posted on Hatarako Net, a job information site for employees, temporary workers, and part-time workers.

Further research showed the number of temporary staff job openings was approximately 173,000, a decrease of 10.6% from the previous year but an increase of 12.4% from the previous month.

The average hourly wage in each area is JPY 1,640 (USD 11.15) in the Kanto area - down JPY 10 (USD 0.07) from the previous year and JPY 8 from the previous month. It stood at JPY 1,401 (USD 9.52) in the Tokai area, up JPY 18 (USD 0.12) from the previous year and JPY 5 (USD 0.03) from the previous month.

Meanwhile, in the Kansai area, the average hourly wage stood at JPY 1,469 (USD 9.99) in the Kansai area, a JPY 35 (USD 0.24) increase compared to the previous year and an increase of JPY 6 (USD 0.04) compared to the previous month.
