Taiwan – Majority of firms plan to pay a Lunar New Year bonus (Taipei Times)

26 October 2022

More than 70% of companies in Taiwan have said they would pay their employees a cash bonus at the end of the lunar year in January next year, with most of them planning to give 1.17 months’ wage on average, reports Taipei Times, citing a survey from job search firm Yes123 Job Bank. Among the 71.4% of companies that have decided to hand out year-end bonuses before Lunar New Year’s Eve (21 January), 20.7% said the payment would be higher than this year’s, while 6% said it would be lower. Meanwhile, 73.3% of those companies who are handing out bonuses are planning to pay a bonus similar to this year’s, which averaged 1.17 months’ salary. A similar survey carried out by yes123 last year found that 66.9% of companies in Taiwan had planned to give bonuses, while 4.8% did not intend to.

Approximately 8.9% of the companies polled by Yes123 Job Bank said they had decided not to give their employees a bonus in January 2023 while 19.7% were still considering the issue. Yes123 spokesperson Yang Tsung-pin said Lunar New Year bonuses are likely to increase in January, as global demand for Taiwan’s industrial exports remains strong and the domestic economy is expected to rebound following the lifting of Taiwan’s border controls this month.
