Taiwan – Government aims to attract 400,000 overseas workers in 10 years (Focus Taiwan)

02 September 2022

Taiwan will work to attract 400,000 foreign workers over the next 10 years to make up for the shrinking working-age population caused by the country's declining birthrate and ageing population, reports Focus Taiwan, citing a government official. Kung Ming-hsin, head of Taiwan's National Development Council (NDC), said Taiwan's industrial development focused primarily on contract manufacturing, which led many educated individuals to seek job opportunities overseas. Ming-hsin said the government plans to focus on three areas, strengthening the recruitment of white-collar foreign professionals, attracting and retaining more international students of ethnic Chinese background, and increasing the retention of migrant workers in Taiwan, many of whom are young and have received a vocational or university education. Ming-hsin said it is hoped that these individuals will come to live and work in Taiwan, adding that the goal is for the country to add 400,000 new people in its workforce over the next decade.
