South Korea – Temporary workers down 2.1% in April, seasonally adjusted unemployment rate improves slightly to 2.6%

The number of temporary workers in South Korea declined by 2.1% year over year to approximately 4.61 million in April 2023, according to data released by Statistics Korea.

When compared to the previous month, the number of temporary workers rose slightly by 0.8% in April 2023. The temporary employment data is not seasonally adjusted.

Further labour market data from Statistics Korea showed that the unemployment rate marked 2.8% in April, down 0.2% year-on-year.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the unemployment rate stood at 2.6% in April, down 0.1% from the year prior and down 0.2% the month prior.

The number of unemployed persons totalled 804,000 people in April, which decreased 59,000 persons or 6.9% year-on-year.

The number of employed persons totalled 28.43 million persons in April, which went up 354,000 persons or 1.3% year-on-year.

The employment to population ratio recorded 62.7% in April, up 0.6% year-on-year.

By industry, the business, personal, public service & others industry saw the biggest increase over the year (5.0%) while on the other hand the wholesale & retail trade, accommodation & food industry recorded a decline of 0.7% over the year.

The economically active population marked 29.23 million persons in April, which grew 294,000 persons or 1.0% year-on-year.

The labour force participation rate stood at 64.4% in April, up 0.4% year-on-year.
