South Korea – Temp jobs rise 9.8% year over year in January, total job growth is largest in 22 years

16 February 2022

The number of workers in South Korea categorized as temporary workers rose by 9.8% year over year in January to a total of more than 4.2 million, according to data released Wednesday by Statistics Korea. The data was not seasonally adjusted.

In January 2021, the number of temporary workers had fallen by 12.7% on a year-over-year basis.

The number of permanent workers rose by 4.7% to 15.3 million.

Meanwhile, the number of day laborers fell by 5.3%.

South Korea added 1.1 million jobs year over year in January. Reuters reported this was the largest increase in 22 years, though it was due to a low employment base and supported by the government’s fiscal spending.

Total employment in January rose by 0.5% year over year to 45.2 million and was essentially flat from December.

South Korea’s unemployment rate fell to 3.6% in January from 3.8% in December on a seasonally adjusted basis.

Last year, an OECD report found that Korea ranked second in percent of salaried jobs that were temporary, The Korea Herald reported.
