South Korea – Nearly half of non-IT grads want a job in the IT sector

Nearly half, or 46%, of graduate jobseekers in South Korea with non-IT majors said they would like to get a job in IT development, according to a survey from hiring platform Saramin.

Saramin surveyed 1,510 job seekers without IT majors on whether they would like to get a job in IT development.

The main reason they wanted to get a job in an IT job was 'because it is a promising job' (59.5%). The next reason was because 'there is a high demand for manpower due to the digital transformation of the entire industry' (49.9%). This was followed by 'because the salary and treatment are better than other jobs' (42.4%), and 'I want to do a central job in an IT industry company' (17%).

The graduates also expect a higher employment success rate (89.5%) if they switch to an IT job.

Web development' was the most common IT development job that respondents wanted to work for with 38.5%. This was followed by 'app development' (36.2%), 'database' (22.6%), 'network security' (19.5%), 'AI' (18.9%), and 'game development' (18.6%).

Meanwhile, 40.6% of non-majors who are willing to work in IT said that they were preparing to get a job in IT.

The most common answer for preparing to work in IT was 'taking a developer training course' (50.4%), 'taking a course related to coding, etc.' (42.9%), and 'studying through lectures and books related to coding' (36.9%).

Meanwhile, 68.4% of the total respondents said they would like to change their major if they could turn back time. More than half of graduates (54%) would choose to be an 'IT/Computer major'.
