Quess Corp tax demand order quashed by Madras High Court

Indian staffing firm Quess Corp announced this week that the Honourable High Court of Judicature at Madras quashed the order for income tax demand of INR 605.6 million (USD 7.3 million) and a penalty of INR 60.6 million (USD 0.7 million) against the company.

In October 2023, the company received an order demanding tax liability of INR 605.6 million and a penalty of INR 60.6 million (USD 0.7 million) for 2017-18 (Apr-Mar), passed by deputy commissioner, Chennai, large taxpayers unit.

Earlier this month, the group filed a Writ Petition before the Madras High Court in the matter of the order and demand dated 9 October 2023 passed by Deputy Commissioner, Chennai (S.T.)-1, Large Taxpayers Unit for the tax liability of INR 605.6 million (USD 7.3 million) and a penalty of INR 60.6 million (USD 0.7 million) for the financial year 2017-18.

Separately, in October, Quess Corp announced it has received a tax demand for INR 3 billion (USD 36.0 million) for the assessment year 2019-2020. In January Quess Corp said it received a rectification order from the Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax, reducing the original demand of INR 3 billion (USD 36.0 million) for the assessment year 2019-2020 to INR 1.41 billion (USD 16.9 million).

Earlier this week Quess Corp. announced it plans to demerge into three businesses.
