New Zealand’s filled jobs record 1.1% increase in March quarter, growth led by accommodation and food services

The number of filled jobs in New Zealand went up by 1.1% on a seasonally adjusted basis in the March 2023 quarter when compared to the December 2022 quarter, according to data from Statistics New Zealand.

Total actual filled jobs in the March 2023 quarter stood at 2.26 million.

A filled job is defined as a continuing employer-employee relationship.

At an industry level, the largest changes in seasonally adjusted filled jobs compared with the December 2022 quarter were in accommodation and food services which was up by 3.9% (5,708 jobs). This was followed by administrative and support services, which was up 2.9% (2,964 jobs), health care and social assistance, up 1.1% (2,906 jobs) and construction, up 0.9% (1,609 jobs).

At a regional level, the largest changes in seasonally adjusted filled jobs compared with the December 2022 quarter were in Auckland, up 1.3% (9,597 jobs); Canterbury, up 1.0% (2,932 jobs); Waikato, up 1.3% (2,907 jobs); Wellington, up 0.8% (1,952 jobs); and Bay of Plenty, up 1.2% (1,621 jobs).

In actual terms, from the March 2022 quarter to the March 2023 quarter, the number of filled jobs rose by 2.2% (23,811 jobs) for men and rose by 3.5% (37,871 jobs) for women.

Meanwhile, for the year ended March 2023 compared with the year ended March 2022, total gross earnings were up 8.8%.
