New Zealand – Online job ads climb 9.5% over the year in September, quarterly growth up 4.4%

Online job advertising in New Zealand grew by 9.5% in September 2022 when compared to September 2021, according to the latest research from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment in New Zealand.

For the three month period ended in September 2022, quarterly growth stood at 4.4%.

In the September 2022 quarter, increases in online job advertisements were seen in six out of nine industries.

The strongest growth was in the Education (5.1%) followed by Manufacturing (3.5%) and Business Services industries (3.1%). Growth in the Education industry most likely represents churn in employment, as there was weak growth in average filled jobs in the September 2022 quarter for Education and training (up 1.6%). Education also led growth over the year (14.9%).

In the September 2022 quarter, online job advertisements increased in all eight occupation groups. Overall, Community & personal services had the strongest growth in the quarter (up 8%).

Over the year to September 2022, there was growth in most occupation groups, with strong growth in Community & personal services (up 32.8%), Technicians & trades (up 16.4%) and Labourers (up 14.9%) groups, while there was a fall or no growth in online advertisements for Managers (down 3.3%) and Machinery operators & drivers (0%).

When compared to the previous quarter, online job advertising increased in all five skill levels in the September 2022 quarter. Growth in online job advertisements for skilled workers was the strongest (up 7%).

Over the year to September 2022, online advertising grew in all skill levels, especially for skilled and unskilled workers, coinciding with strong increases in online job advertising for the Education and Hospitality industries.

By region, online advertising increased in all regions, except Waikato, during the September 2022 quarter. The largest quarterly increase was seen in Otago/Southland (up 5.7%).

Over the year to September 2022, there was moderate growth in all regions.

The Ministry’s Jobs Online monitors changes in an index of online job advertisements, not the number of actual online job advertisements. It uses information from online job advertisements from four internet job boards: Seek, Trade Me Jobs, the Education Gazette and Kiwi Health Jobs.
