New Zealand – Number of filled jobs rise 0.5% in June 2022 quarter

The number of filled jobs in New Zealand across all industries rose by 0.5% in the June 2022 quarter when compared with the March 2022 quarter, according to seasonally adjusted data from Statistics New Zealand.

By industry, the largest changes in seasonally adjusted filled jobs compared with the March 2022 quarter, were in professional, scientific, and technical services which was up 1.1% (2,001 jobs), agriculture, forestry, and fishing, up 2.0% (1,871 jobs), health care and social assistance, up 0.7% (1,807 jobs). The largest decreases were in education and training, down 2.9% (5,846 jobs), and administrative and support services, down 1.1% (1,057 jobs).

By region, the largest changes in the number of seasonally adjusted filled jobs compared with the March 2022 quarter were in Canterbury, up 0.6% (1,642 jobs), Wellington – up 0.5% (1,280 jobs), Hawke’s Bay, up 1.6% (1,232 jobs), Waikato – up 0.6% (1,161 jobs), and Gisborne – up 3.1% (651 jobs).

Statistics New Zealand noted that in actual terms, for the year ended June 2022 (compared with the year ended June 2021), total gross earnings were up 9.2% (NZD 12.6 billion (USD 7.4 billion)).

From the June 2021 quarter to the June 2022 quarter, the number of filled jobs rose by 2.6% (27,963 jobs) for men and rose by 2.8% (29,897 jobs) for women.

At an industry level the largest increases in total gross earnings for the year ended June 2022, compared with the year ended June 2021, were in health care and social assistance – up 12% (NZD 1.9 billion (USD 1.1 million), professional, scientific, and technical services, up 14% (NZD 1.9 billion (USD 1.1 billion)), and construction, up 12% (NZD 1.4 billion (USD 824.8 million)).
