New Zealand – New labour government proposes repeal on ‘Hobbit’ independent contractor law (Stuff.co.nz)

02 November 2017

New Zealand’s newly elected labour government has proposed to repeal an independent contractor law commonly referred to as the’ Hobbit Law’, reports Stuff.co.nz. The Employment Relations (Film Production Work) Amendment Bill classified workers in the film industry as independent contractors and prevented them from collective bargaining. It was passed through the government in 2010 at the same time the film ‘The Hobbit’ was being made and was created to help ensure that the film’s production remained in New Zealand. Workplace Relations Minister Iain Lees-Galloway has said that restoring workers’ rights was a priority and stated that he wants “legislation at least introduced within the first 100 days of government.” Meanwhile, Equity New Zealand, an entertainment performers union, has welcomed the plans to repeal the Hobbit Law.
