Japan temporary workers' wages rise in August

The average hourly wage in August 2023 for temporary workers across three major Japanese metropolitan areas (Kanto, Tokai and Kansai) stood at JPY 1,574 (USD 10.64), up JPY 29 (USD 0.20) from the previous year and up JPY 4 (USD 0.027) from the last month, according to data from Dip Corp. (2379:TYO), a staffing firm and job board operator based in Tokyo.

The research is based on the job advertisement data for temporary workers posted on Hatarako Net, a job information site for employees, temporary workers, and part-time workers.

Meanwhile, the number of temporary staffing job openings was approximately 165,000, an increase of 4.5% year-on-year and 7.8% month-on-month.

The average hourly wage in each area is JPY 1,665 (USD 11.25) in the Kanto area (an increase of JPY 20 (USD 0.14)  compared to the previous year and an increase of JPY 5 (USD 0.034) compared to the last month); JPY 1,398 (USD 9.45) in the Tokai area (an increase of JPY 18 (USD 0.12) compared to the previous year and a decrease of JPY 3 (USD 0.020) compared to the last month); and JPY 1,453 (USD 9.82) in the Kansai area (JPY 45 (USD 0.30) increase compared to the previous year, steady compared with the previous month).

Earlier this month, Dip Corp's research and data from the part-time job information site Baitoru showed the average hourly wage for part-time workers across Japan in August was JPY 1,319 (USD 8.92), a record high and an increase of JPY 89 (USD 0.60) compared to the previous year, and an increase of JPY 39 (0.26) compared to the previous month.
