Japan – Recruit Holdings subsidiary Glassdoor acquires social network Fishbowl

16 September 2021

Community site Glassdoor announced its acquisition of social network Fishbowl.

The transaction was made through Glassdoor’s parent company, Tokyo-based Recruit Holdings Co. Ltd., which acquired Glassdoor in 2018. The transaction closed in early September; financial terms were not disclosed.

The Fishbowl brand will remain distinct from Glassdoor as they explore the best ways for both products to work together, Glassdoor told SIA. “Teams are actively working to assess how best to leverage the power and engagement of Fishbowl with the audience on Glassdoor and right now we’re focused on user growth,” a company representative said.

Launched in 2016 by co-founders Matt Sunbulli and Loren Appin, Fishbowl is a free app with more than 18 million conversations, comments and direct messages in thousands of “bowls” where professionals can discuss career, industry and workplace-related topics.

Sunbulli, who serves as Fishbowl’s CEO, will be taking on the role of VP of product management. Appin, who is COO, will transition to senior director, product management. Also, Julio Viera, Fishbowl’s VP of engineering, will become senior director, engineering.

“The world of work is dramatically changing and so are workers’ needs,” said Glassdoor CEO Sutherland-Wong. “Glassdoor and Fishbowl provide a look inside the ongoing transformation and what’s crystal clear is that workers need more information, more connection and more community, no matter where they’re located,” said Glassdoor CEO Sutherland-Wong. “With this acquisition, we’re giving job seekers and employees an unmatched real-time look into the employee experience across companies and industries.”

Working in a hybrid position or fully remote amid can make it even harder to build relationships or even advance your career, Glassdoor noted in a blog post.

“Fishbowl by Glassdoor allows you to post and answer your most burning workplace and career questions anonymously using a forum-style platform,” Glassdoor stated. “You can connect with like-minded professionals from all over the world where you are free to discuss everything from your work environment, experience, management, and even your salary.”

Fishbowl also provides the option to participate anonymously.
