Japan – Less than 20% of workers telecommute despite calls to do so amid pandemic (NHK World)

26 October 2020

Less than 20% of workers in Japan were found to be telecommuting despite calls to do so to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, reports NHK World, citing a poll from the Japan Productivity Center. The poll wanted to find out if the pandemic had actually led to changes in the way people work in Japan. The results showed that 18% of the 1,100 respondents worked remotely at least one day a week as of October. Productivity Center officials said companies in regional cities and smaller firms may not have the necessary IT systems to allow teleworking. Those who do work from home are split more or less evenly on the productivity of telecommuting. Half, or 50%, said their efficiency has improved, while 49% said it has declined.
