Japan – Job to applicant ratio on the rise in August: Persol

16 September 2022

The job-to-applicants ratio in Japan for August 2022 increased by 0.11 points from the previous month to 2.09, this was the 24th consecutive month of growth according to research from job change service doda, operated by Persol Career.

The 2.09 figure compares to Japan’s labour ministry data which showed the jobs-to-applicants ratio in July was 1.29, labour ministry data showed, above June's 1.27

Meanwhile, the number of people wishing to change jobs was 3.6% lower than the previous month but 11.2% higher compared to the same month last year.

Persol added that the number of people wishing to change jobs tends to settle down during the summer vacation period.

Looking ahead, the number of job openings in September is expected to increase, as companies' desire to hire will continue to rise in anticipation of economic activity. On the other hand, the number of people wishing to change jobs is expected to increase as more people start job hunting with the goal of retiring at the end of the year from around September, and the ratio of job openings to job seekers is expected to remain flat. In the future, if measures to stimulate tourism demand such as national travel support are implemented, it is assumed that job trends will also be affected.
