Japan – Government calls on companies to end practice of ‘owahara’ in recruiting (The Mainichi)

18 April 2023

The Japanese government is calling on companies to end its practice of “owahara” when recruiting students, The Mainichi reported. Owahara is when company recruiter pressure university students who have been unofficially offered employment to end their job-seeking activities so that they join the firm. In some cases, students are pressured to decline offers from other firms. "The fact that the government released its official stance on the issue that's been shared among students and related parties is significant,” said Yohei Tsunemi, associate professor at Chiba University of Commerce.
