Japan – Average hourly wages for temporary workers up 3.6% in August

Average hourly wages for temporary workers in the three major metropolitan areas in Japan for August 2022 rose by 3.6% over the year, according to data from Japanese job board Dip Corp and Hatarako Net, a job information site for employees, temporary workers, and part-time workers.

The average hourly wage for temporary workers in August was JPY 1,545 (USD 10.81), up JPY 54 (USD 0.38) from the previous year, but down JPY 2 (USD 0.01) from the previous month.

Furthermore, the number of job openings for temporary workers, was about 158,000, which is about 1.3 times more than the previous year.

By metropolitan area, the average hourly wage is:

  • JPY 1,645 (USD 11.51) in the Kanto area (up JPY 56 (USD 0.39) from the previous year, down JPY 2 (USD 0.01) from the previous month),
  • JPY 1,380 (USD 9.66) in the Tokai area (up JPY 37 (USD 0.26) from the previous year, down JPY 2 (USD 0.01) from the previous month), and
  • JPY 1,408 (USD 9.85) in the Kansai area (an increase of JPY 33 (USD 0.23) from the previous year, but a decrease of JPY 2 (USD 0.01) from the previous month).

By occupation category, average hourly wages increased year-on-year in five major categories.

Wages stood at JPY 1,511 (USD 10.57) (down JPY 3 (USD 0.02) from the previous year, no change from the previous month) for administrative/office work.

Wages totalled JPY 1,471 (USD 10.30) (up JPY 6 (USD 0.04) from the previous year, down JPY 1 (USD 0.007) from the previous month) for sales/sales/restaurant/service work.

WEB/Creator-related wages were JPY 1,824 (USD 12.77) (up JPY 54 (USD 0.38) over the year, up JPY 11 (USD 0.07) from the previous month).

IT/Engineer-related wages were JPY 2,226 (up JPY 87 (USD 0.61) over the year, down JPY 5 (USD 0.03) from the previous month), and medical/nursing care/ Research/education was JPY 1,540 (USD 10.78) (up JPY 82 (USD 0.57) from the previous year, up JPY 6 (USD 0.04) from the previous month).

Factory/light work/logistics/civil engineering was JPY 1,310 (USD 9.18) (up JPY 33 (USD 0.23) from the previous year, up JPY 7 (USD 0.05) from the previous month).
