Japan – 2% of female workers are paid more than men (Mainichi Shimbun)

09 March 2023

Only 2% of female workers in Japan are paid more than men among full-time employees, according to a report from the Mainichi Shimbun, which analysed data from the labor ministry.

The “Database of companies promoting women’s active engagement” examined the difference in wages between men and women from 1,129 companies as of 6th March. The data revealed that on average male workers were paid as much as 76% more than their female counterparts. Factors that may have contributed to the high gender wage gap include length of service and low ratio of women participation in management roles, the Mainichi Shimbun reports. The analysis conducted includes Japanese companies with 300 or less employees that voluntarily disclosed their numbers.
