India – Education and training sector notes increase in talent demand

28 October 2020

Online classes and the rise of Education Technology has triggered an increase in talent demand within the Education/Training sector in India, according to the TimesJobs RecruiteX September 2020 edition.

The Education/Training sector posted talent demand growth of 27% month-on-month and 7% year-on-year. Functional area wise too, Teaching/Education profiles saw growth of over 30% in the monthly analysis. The TimesJobs RecruiteX is a monthly recruitment index that records the demand and supply of talent at India Inc.

TimesJobs noted that historically, education-related jobs and work profiles see seasonal upticks around the time when new sessions start. However, Covid-19’s lockdown has pushed the talent demand for these profiles into a continuous upward rally ever since March 2020.

Sanjay Goyal, Business Head, TimesJobs and TechGig said, “The Education/Training sector’s talent demand performance is like a comeback story of an unconventional sector. Typically, education-related work profiles are all-weather jobs with seasonal spikes. However, the Covid-19 lockdown forced all classes to go online, and education continuity became a stronger resolve.”

“Add to that the stupendous rise of the Edu-Tech domain in the past months. In Sept 2020, the Education/Training sector posted more talent demand than the other high volume sectors as IT/Telecom, BFSI (banking, financial services and insurance), FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) and retail combined together. Now that the educational institutes have started re-opening, partially though, I feel this growth in talent demand will continue for some more time.”

Meanwhile the recently reopened hospitality sector noted a 23% month-on-month uptick.

TimesJobs also said that ever since the Covid-19 induced lockdown came into effect earlier this year, two work profiles saw a continuous rise - teachers and the gig workers. In Sept 2020, both these profiles saw maximum talent demand, followed by the BFSI-related profiles. Overall, Teaching/Education saw a rise of over 30%, business management/consultants/freelancers saw a rise of 24%, and banks/insurance/financial services saw a rise of 18%.

Mumbai and Pune saw a rise of 14% and 11% in talent demand in Sept 2020 respectively. Meanwhile, work experience wise, the top three most sought after categories were: 10-20 years: 14%, 5-10 years: 9% and 2-5 years: 3%.
