China – More overseas students turn into domestic job-seekers despite low pay (Yicai Global)

08 January 2021

Chinese students abroad are increasingly looking to come home for work, partly due to China's tight pandemic control, but the domestic salaries don't match their expectations, reports Yicai Global citing data from job board Zhaopin. The number of overseas students applying for domestic jobs rose by 34% in 2020 from a year ago. The increase was a bit more than 5% in 2019 and 4% in 2018. More than half, or 57%, of the job applicants said that one of the main reasons to return to China would be "better epidemic control." More than 45% of the total said that in China, "life is more convenient." Domestic salaries didn't match the graduates' expectations. Approximately 57% of them said that pay is lower than anticipated. However, the figure had been 63% in 2019. Meanwhile, 6% of the applicants said that their incomes exceeded their expectations.
