China – LinkedIn is back in China with new jobs app, no social, after closing localized version

15 December 2021

LinkedIn launched its new InCareer jobs app to help Chinese mainland professionals find jobs and companies to find them. The new product comes after LinkedIn announced in October that it was shutting down the localized version of its main platform that served the Chinese market. It reported success in helping people connect with jobs but reported less success in the social aspects of its platform and was also facing greater regulatory compliance requirements in China.

The localized version had begun in China in 2014 and LinkedIn had been the only major Western social media platform operating in China before the closure.

InCareer will not include a social feed or the ability to share posts or articles. However, individual users can update their profiles to be discovered by recruiters. And the product also includes a messaging feature.

The new product was announced in a blog post this week by Mohak Shroff, LinkedIn’s senior VP of engineering.

“InCareer enables Chinese Mainland-based professionals to find and apply for their next job opportunity, stay connected with their professional network and be discovered and messaged by recruiters,” Shroff wrote.

LinkedIn, a division of Microsoft Corp., ranks as the world’s largest online job advertising firm, according to SIA’s “Online Job Advertising: 2021 Market Update” report.
