China – LinkedIn closing down localized version of platform serving Chinese market, new product in works

15 October 2021

LinkedIn announced on Thursday that it is shutting down the localized version of its platform for the Chinese market. Instead, the company will launch a product called InJobs App later this year to connect workers in China with jobs.

“While we’ve found success in helping Chinese members find jobs and economic opportunity, we have not found that same level of success in the more social aspects of sharing and staying informed,” according to a blog post by Mohak Shroff, senior VP of engineering at LinkedIn. “We’re also facing a significantly more challenging operating environment and greater compliance requirements in China.”

InJobs will not include a social feed or the ability to share posts or articles, Shroff wrote.

LinkedIn, a part of Microsoft Corp., ranks as the world’s largest online job advertising firm, according to SIA’s “Online Job Advertising: 2021 Market Update” report.

LinkedIn began its localized version in China in 2014. The BBC reported that LinkedIn had been the only major Western social media platform operating in China.
