20 July 2023

Australia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased by 0.1% to 3.5% in June when compared to the same period last year, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

On a monthly basis, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate saw no change.

In June 2023, the number of unemployed persons totalled 504,400, down by 1,600 when compared to the previous year and down by 10,900 when compared to the previous month.

South Australia recorded the seasonally adjusted highest unemployment rate at 4.2% while New South Wales recorded the lowest (2.9%).

On a non-seasonally adjusted basis, the unemployment rate in Australia also stood at 3.5%, down 0.2% over the year and unchanged over the month.

Meanwhile, further seasonally adjusted figures for June showed that the number of unemployed persons totalled 14,046,100, up 3.0% over the year and up 0.2% over the month.

Bjorn Jarvis, ABS head of labour statistics, said, "With employment increasing by around 33,000 people and the number of unemployed decreasing by 11,000 people, the unemployment rate remained at 3.5%.”

Jarvis said, “The rise in employment in June saw the employment-to-population ratio remain at a record high 64.5%, reflecting a tight labour market in which employment has recently increased in line with population growth.”

Australia’s labour force participation rate totalled 66.8%, up 0.1% over the year and down 0.1% over the month.

Monthly hours totalled 1.94 billion, an increase of 88 million over the year and up 6 million over the month.
