Australia – Victorian government announces trial sick leave for casual workers (ABC News)

23 November 2020

Casual workers in industries like cleaning, hospitality and aged care could get up to five days of sick and carer's leave under a "secure work pilot scheme" announced by Australia’s Victoria State Government, reports ABC News. The government says there has been a proliferation of insecure work in recent decades and roughly 600,000 workers in Victoria are casuals. The two-year pilot would commence in late 2021 or early 2022, and focus on "priority" industries with high rates of insecure work. Eligible workers would get up to five days' pay at the minimum wage for either leave payment when they are sick or taking care of someone else who is sick. The state government will spend AUD 5 million (USD 3.6 million) to design the pilot, in consultation with unions and industry groups. While the pilot will be funded by the state, "modest" industry levies would likely be charged if it became permanent, Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews said. The government is yet to work out what documentation workers would need to provide, and which occupations would be covered by the scheme. The pilot has been met with opposition with federal Industrial Relations Minister Christian Porter calling it a "business and employment-killing approach".
