Australia – Seasonally adjusted jobless rate rises to 7.0% in October

Australia’s unemployment rate rose to 7.0% in October 2020, up 1.7% when compared to the same period in 2019, according to data published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Unemployment increased by 238,900 over the year to 960,900 people in October 2020 and when compared to the previous month it increase by 25,500.

When compared to September 2020, the unemployment rate increase by 0.1%.

The number of employed people decreased by 0.1% on October 2020 when compared to October 2019 to a total of 12.77 million people. On a monthly basis this was an increase of 1.4%.

Meanwhile, the labour force participation rate stood at 65.8%, down 0.1% compared to last year and up 0.9% compared to the previous month.

Monthly hours worked in all jobs stood at 1.71 billion, down 3.4% compared to last year, but up 1.2% compared to the previous month.

The youth unemployment rate increased month-to-month by 1.0% to 15.6% and increased by 3.1% over the year to October 2020.
