Australia – Plutus Payroll trial approaches end in New South Wales court (PerthNow)

16 January 2023

The New South Wales Supreme Court in Australia is reportedly summing up one of Australia’s largest ever alleged tax frauds involving payroll provider Plutus Payroll, according to PerthNow. Plutus Payroll had allegedly been funneling wage payments through several sub-contracted ‘second-tier’ companies. The court was told that Plutus was behind a scheme to withhold more than AUD 105 million (USD 73.2 million) from the tax office over three years, using the second-tier companies. The unpaid taxes allegedly funded lavish lifestyles featuring fast cars, aeroplanes and properties.

The trial began in April 2022 with members of the group facing charges including conspiring to defraud the commonwealth and dealing with proceeds of crime.

Justice Anthony Payne had continued summarising the case in the New South Wales Supreme Court today as Adam Cranston, Lauren Cranston, Dev Menon, Jason Onley and Patrick Willmott face trial for their alleged roles in the Plutus Payroll scandal. Justice Payne will continue summarising the case on Tuesday before the jury is expected to retire to consider a verdict on Wednesday.
