Australia – National Minimum Wage increases from today

01 July 2022

The National Minimum Wage in Australia increases from today, 1 July 2022.

Australia’s Fair Work Commission announced earlier this month that the National Minimum Wage will increase by AUD 40.00 per week (approximately USD 28.00), which amounts to an increase of 5.2%. The announcement came after the Commission’s Annual Wage Review.

The National Minimum Wage applies to employees not covered by an award or registered agreement. The new National Minimum Wage is AUD 812.60 (USD 552.44) per week or AUD 21.38 (USD 14.53) per hour.

For some awards in the aviation, hospitality and tourism industries, the increase will happen from 1 October 2022. The delay was reportedly due to “exceptional circumstances”, including their slower recovery from the Covid-19 recession.

Other award wages, including junior, apprentice and supported wages that are based on adult minimum wages, will get a proportionate increase. Wage increases for trainees under the National Training Wage come into effect on the same date as award minimum wage increases.
