Australia – Monash University to back-pay casual staff millions following wage errors (Syndey Morning Herald)

24 September 2021

Australia-based Monash University is set to pay current and former casual tutorial staff more than AUD 8.6 million (AUD 4.56 million) in back pay after an internal review spanning 6½ years found significant wage errors, reports The Sydney Morning Herald. The wide-ranging review found “inconsistent descriptions of teaching activities” amounting to about AUD 7.7 million (USD 4.1 million) in lost wages for staff, a university spokesperson said in a statement. This represented approximately 2% of all sessional payments made between January 2014 and June 2020, the spokesperson added. The audit also found timesheet submission errors representing about AUD 900,000 (USD 653,827) in lost wages, or 0.3% of all sessional payments across the review period. The university spokesperson said that while the errors were “unintentional and represent a very small percentage of the total payments made to sessional staff” throughout the review period, “we acknowledge the inconvenience and concern this may have caused to those affected and sincerely apologise for these pay errors”. Monash said it will attempt to process the back payments for casual staff who have worked at the university in the past 12 months by the end of October 2021. The payments will include any applicable interest and superannuation.
