Australia – Labor strike at shipping companies causing further shipment delays

20 October 2021

A labor strike among three of Australia’s biggest delivery companies is causing shipment delays in the country, according to an article published on news.com.au.

The three companies involved are StarTrack, FedEx, and BevChain. The workers, who are expected to strike 24 hours on Thursday, are demanding better pay, job security, and a limit on the outsourcing of work. After six months of negotiations, the Transport Workers Union (TWU) has not come to an agreement with the shipping companies.

Michael Kaine, the national secretary of the TWU believes big companies are profiting off the pandemic and are purposely delaying an agreement in order to “swindle workers for as long as possible,” the article notes. Kaine believes the workers should be provided with fair pay and conditions.

StarTrack claimed that it already met some of TWU’s demands, using its own staff over contractors and offering workers a 3% pay increase for the next three years. FedEx offered to improve pay and superannuation.

The country has already been facing substantial demand for online shopping due to lockdowns, and the Australia Post has already had to pause deliveries twice due to networks being overloaded with demand.
