Australia – Female casual worker at bubble tea store slapped in face and kicked over alleged pay dispute in viral video

03 February 2021

A woman in Australia was slapped and kicked by a man over a supposed pay dispute at a bubble tea store in Adelaide, according to 7news.com.au.

The footage of the tea store incident has gone viral with publications such as The Daily Mail, The Australian, and others publishing the video (Warning: the links comprise violent scenes).

The video shows the woman, who is reportedly a casual worker, and a group confronting the assumed owner of the store over what she argues is a pay dispute. Translations by viewers say the woman claims she was fired from her job at the store after only a handful of shifts and is demanding to be paid for them. He allegedly replies that he won’t pay her because she was a trainee. When the argument escalates into a shouting match, a second man approaches her and then slaps her in the face.

Another female employee who intervened on behalf of the woman was also shoved by the same man.

According to 9news, the man, named Mr Guo, was charged for slapping and then kicking the woman to the ground.

In a statement posted on Fun Tea's front door, the company denied the alleged attack was related to any wage dispute and said the alleged attacker was not an employee.

A statement on behalf of the two female workers allegedly assaulted in the Fun Tea incident claims the casual workers were paid between AUD 10 and AUD 12 per hour (USD 7.62 to 9.14 per hour) when the minimum legal rate at restaurant was AUD 25.51 (USD 19.44) per hour.

The Working Women’s Centre SA Inc. is now representing the women.

“Our client(s) strongly reject Funtea’s statement that Mr Guo was not related to Funtea. Mr Guo is a close friend of Mr Dunn, the owner and manager of Funtea. The Funtea statement is misleading,” a statement from the Centre read.

“Our client entirely rejects any assertion that the assault was not in relation to a complaint about her pay,” the Centre stated. “Our client was asking to be paid her wages for that night and the two weeks prior. This is clear from the video.”

The Centre added that all matters relating to the assault, wage theft and mistreatment will be done through formal legal avenues.
