SIA Provides Guidance for GDPR Implementation

New EU Data Protection Legislation to Take Effect

Mountain View, California & London, UK — May 3, 2018 — Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA), the global advisor on staffing and workforce solutions, has issued a new report entitled Implementing GDPR: A Guide. This report assists the workforce solutions ecosystem in understanding their obligations and in implementing GDPR in the context of contingent workforce management and related activities.

Europe’s laws on data protection will undergo fundamental changes as of May 25, 2018 as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) legislation goes into effect. GDPR provides a single set of rules, replacing the existing legislation in each of the 28 EU Member States and represents the gold standard in terms of international laws putting individuals in control of their data.

Any organization that handles the personal data of EU citizens is affected, not just organizations that are physically located within the EU, and will need to comply with the GDPR. Any company established outside of the EU but offering goods or services to customers within the EU, or monitoring the behavior of EU citizens, will also have to adhere to the rules established by the GDPR.

“It is no surprise that GDPR is one of the most talked about pieces of legislation”, says Fiona Coombe, SIA’s Director of Legal and Regulatory Research. “The scope of GDPR is much wider than previous legislation, both geographically and in terms of the data it applies to. For the first time, ‘personal data’ will include online identifiers such as IP addresses and cookie data. It also introduces new rights for individuals to manage the use of their data; and brings new obligations for businesses that simply process data on behalf of a third party. And of course, the maximum fines for non-compliance will increase substantially to EUR 20 million or 4% of worldwide turnover, whichever is the greater.”

The Guide provides staffing firms, hirers and workforce solutions providers with an overview of the GDPR and provides a checklist for organizations to achieve compliance with the GDPR.

The full report Implementing GDPR: A Guide is available for SIA Corporate and CWS Council Members.
