US healthcare staffing represents roughly half of global market

The size of the US temporary staffing market for healthcare occupations has grown from $10.1 billion in 2013 to a record $15.9 billion last year, a 57% jump according to Staffing Industry Analysts’ estimates, fueled by a wave of newly-insured individuals and cyclical growth in the economy, among other factors.

From a global perspective, we estimate that US healthcare staffing accounts for slightly more than half of the $30 billion global market, according to our recent report on the Global Staffing Industry Market Estimates and Forecast. We estimate that Europe has an $8 billion healthcare staffing industry and the Asia Pacific region a $5 billion market.

The nature of each country’s healthcare delivery model—whether government run or mostly privatized—plays a key role in shaping the opportunity for healthcare staffing agencies, although even among government run healthcare systems, openness to agencies varies. Canada, for example, has a government administered healthcare system that to date has had very little engagement with staffing firms. On the other hand, the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK is a government agency that is a significant user of private staffing firms, as discussed in this report available to our corporate members with access to our European reports.
