UK – Transport for London grants Uber temporary two-month licence reprieve in London (TechCrunch)

25 September 2019

London’s transport regulator, Transport for London, has given Uber a two-month  reprieve to continue operating in London, reports TechCrunch. Uber’s current (provisional) licence was set to expire today, but TfL issued a two-month extension on its private hire vehicle licence, not a full five-year term, as Uber had hoped. On September 2017 TfL denied Uber a new licence to operate in London on the basis that the company is not a “fit and proper” private car hire operator. However, in June 2018 the UK court granted the ride-sharing firm a 15-month probationary licence with conditions. TfL says the extension has the same conditions Uber has been subject to over the past 15 months, as well as some new conditions “to ensure passenger safety” which it says cover ride sharing, appropriate insurance and driver document checks by Uber.  The ride-sharing firm claims to have made a number of changes since Tfl stepped in, including a new senior leadership team in the UK as well as limits to operating hours for its drivers.
