UK – Sports Direct fails to meet 2016 pledges on guaranteed hours and permanent contracts (The Guardian)

05 September 2017

Sports Direct has failed to fulfill its promise to offer guaranteed hours to its workers and transfer some of its warehouse staff to permanent contracts a year after promising extensive changes in working practices, reports The Guardian. Last year the company published a report on its working practices and offered its casual retail staff guaranteed hours instead of zero-hours contracts. It also said it would be considering a test scheme transferring ten agency staff a month to Sports Direct. The report was published after an investigation by the Guardian which found that temporary workers at its warehouse were subject to lengthy security searches which, in some cases, resulted in their pay falling below the legal minimum wage. Trade Union Unite’s assistant general secretary, Steve Turner, commented, “This revelation shows it is ‘business as usual’ at Sports Direct and casts doubt on just how sincere it is about cleaning up its act.” The company declined to comment however it is holding its Annual General Meeting tomorrow.
