UK – Number of youth NEETs on the rise

21 November 2019

The number of young UK people (aged 16 to 24 years) who are not in education, employment or training (NEET), saw an increase in the three months’ period ended September 2019 when compared to the same period last year, according to data from the Office of National Statistics.

ONS data showed that there were 800,000 young people (aged 16 to 24 years) in the UK who were considered NEET in July to September 2019; this number increased by 43,000 when compared with July to September 2018 and was up 8,000 from April to June 2019.

The percentage of all young people in the UK who were NEET in July to September 2019 was 11.6%; the proportion was up 0.7% from July to September 2018 and up 0.1% from April to June 2019.

Of all young people in the UK who were NEET in July to September 2019, 39.6% were looking for, and available for, work and therefore classified as unemployed; the remainder were either not looking for work and/or not available for work and therefore classified as economically inactive.

Earlier this month the ONS published labour market data which showed the employment rate at 76.0% and the unemployment rate at 3.8%.
