UK – McDonald’s workers to go on strike over wages and secure contracts (The Guardian)

22 August 2017

Employees at two McDonald’s restaurants in the UK will go on strike on 4 September, the US Labor Day holiday, in an attempt to coordinate action with allies around the world against the fast food giant, reports the Guardian. Staff at Cambridge and Crayford voted last week to go on strike and are demanding wages of £10 an hour, secure contracts with guaranteed hours and formal trade union recognition from McDonald’s. The UK strikes are taking place with the help of organisers from the Unite union in New Zealand, who are visiting the UK to advise the striking workers. Workers from Belgium will also be joining the strike. In April 2017, it was reported that McDonald’s would offer employees the chance to move off zero-hours contracts and switch to guaranteed hours fixed positions if they want to.
