UK – McDonald’s workers strike in protest over pay and zero-hour contracts (Evening Standard)

04 September 2017

McDonald’s workers in Cambridge and Croydon walked out of restaurants today in a row over low pay and zero-hour contracts, reports the Evening Standard. Approximately 40 members of staff began the 24-hour walkout at midnight, after voting overwhelmingly in favour of a strike. The workers are demanding a £10 per hour starting salary and an end to “drastic cuts” at the fast food restaurants. Members of trade unions, including the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union, joined in early-morning picket lines outside the two restaurants. Meanwhile Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has also offered his support. Earlier this year McDonald’s offered its workers the chance to move off zero-hour contracts and switch to guaranteed hours fixed positions if they wanted to.
