UK – London offers the most opportunities for women in tech

23 June 2016

London offers the greatest opportunities for British women in tech with over 40% of the entire country's female tech workforce employed in the city, according to research by technology recruitment firm Mortimer Spinks and ComputerWeekly.com.

The study surveyed over 3,700 tech professionals in Britain and also revealed that London is the best location in the UK for women to build a business, and that women tech workers in London are 2.5 times more likely to work for a tech start up, than their counterparts in the rest of the UK.

The study also showed that almost a third of London’s tech companies said they have formal initiatives in place to recruit more women to the workforce, compared to less than a quarter in the rest of the country.

Despite the tech industry's progress, the findings also suggest there is still a lot of work to be done. One in 10 tech teams in London have no female employees and more than half say that less than 15% of their teams are women.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, stated during London Technology Week 2016, that he wants the sector to be open to all Londoners and aims to reverse the under-representation of women in the industry.

"London Technology Week has shown how the capital is the most important tech hub in Europe with its vibrant mix of investors, talent and creativity,” Khan said. “Although the sector is flourishing, it is vital that we actively encourage more girls to work in digital and tech to reverse the under-representation of women in this industry. Our current female tech pioneers are the role models for the next generation and as the father of two teenage girls, I want them to have the same opportunities and aspirations. I am determined to work hand-in-hand with individuals and employers like these to nurture more young female entrepreneurs that will contribute to London's economic prosperity."
