According to the latest quarterly totaljobs barometer for the period between April and June 2009 jobs posted or refreshed on the totaljobs.com website rose by 3.5% from 226,000 in May to 234,000 in June this year. However, the number of times jobs were posted or refreshed fell by 17% in the second quarter of 2009 when compared to the first quarter of 2009.
There were 9.7 applications for every job posted or refreshed on the site in June 2009. This represents an increase of 18% over May 2009 when there was an average of 8 applications per job. The increase was even greater for the quarter. There was an average of 8 applications per job posted in the second quarter, up 22% over 6.6 applications in the first quarter of 2009.
There continues to be a huge demand for jobs in Secretarial, PA and Administration sectors. There were 29 applications for every job posted in the second quarter, up 42% on the first.
There is also very strong demand in the Customer Services area, where there were nearly 26 applications for each job, up 16% from the previous quarter.
Two areas showed seasonal growth. Agriculture, Fishing and Forestry was up over 900% to 12 applications per job. There were also 12 graduate applications for every post, up 40% to coincide with the end of the academic year.
London was the only region with more than 10 applications per job posted.
There were 13.5 per applications per job posted for the second quarter, up 4%
from the first quarter.
All regions in the UK continued to show at least 5 job applications per job
posted or refreshed.
