UK – Hundreds of gig economy workers to hold protest march in London (Evening Standard)

29 October 2018

Hundreds of Uber drivers and other gig economy workers are set to stage a protest march through London tomorrow reports the Evening Standard. The protest comes ahead of a Court of Appeal hearing for Uber related to the employment rights and status of the human cloud firm’s drivers. The demonstration, which is part of a nationwide action, has been named "rise of the precarious workers".  The protesters will march to the Royal Courts of Justice, then go to the University of London before passing NHS contractor The Doctors Laboratory, where medical couriers say their pay has been cut. In 2016, London employment tribunal ruled in a landmark case that Uber drivers in the UK should be classified as workers and not self-employed. In November 2017, the Employment Appeals Tribunal upheld the decision. Uber then sought to skip over the Court of Appeals take the case straight to the Supreme Court. However this was rejected, and the case will instead go to the Court of Appeals, which will be the third court to hear the case.
