UK – Home Secretary plans to change rules on disclosing criminal records to employers (The Guardian)

24 April 2019

Employers may not need to know about the criminal records of some job applicants under a review of rules by the UK Home Secretary, The Guardian reports. The UK’s criminal records checks system, known as the Disclosure and Barring Service, means anyone with more than one conviction automatically has details shared with potential employers, no matter how much time has passed. However, the Home Office has held discussions with the Ministry of Justice about a potential change after supreme court ruling in favour of three people who said the rules had had a destructive effect on their lives. Home Secretary Sajid Javid added that issues such as youth crimes should be looked at again.
