UK – Government should expand scheme for temporary agricultural workers, REC says

07 September 2018

A scheme to bring in 2,500 seasonal agricultural workers from outside the EU into the UK was welcomed Thursday by Neil Carberry, chief executive of the Recruitment & Employment Confederation. But the government must bring in more types of workers.

“The reintroduction of the agricultural workers visa scheme is welcome recognition of the challenges farmers face,” Carberry said in a statement. “But we would urge government to go further. There are lots of other people involved in getting fruit and veg onto our tables once it’s harvested. Driving, warehousing, food production and hospitality are all sectors that face shortages.”

A lack of labour could pose a risk to UK prosperity, and the country needs an approach to EU workers that is open to all skill levels as well as a way to ensure those who to the UK are there to work.

“Recruiters are Britain’s jobs market specialists and want to work with the government to build the new system — but it must start with the acknowledgement that many sectors already face critical labour shortages,” Carberry said.

The scheme was announced Thursday by the Home Secretary and Environment Secretary. It would create a two-year pilot program to allowing non-EU migrant workers to work on farms and then return to their own countries after six months. The government plans for the scheme to be run by two scheme operators to oversee the placement of workers. Arrangements for scheme operators will be announced later.

The pilot will begin in the Spring of next year and run until December 2020.
