26 November 2019

Demand for IT professionals in the UK rose by 10% year over year in 2019 while demand for professionals to work in the financial services sector rose by 3%, according to data released Tuesday by the Association of Professional Staffing Companies and business intelligence specialist Vacancysoft.

Among IT jobs, the largest vacancy growth was in professional services where job openings increased by 32% year over year.

The lion’s share of IT vacancies was in London, which accounts for 45% of all roles. The data also showed Vodafone was the top hirer for IT talent; however, IT job openings rose 41% year over year at HSBC.

“The UK has always been a strong competitor for tech talent, and it’s encouraging to see that the current political climate has not stopped the IT sector from thriving,” APSCo Chief Executive Ann Swain said.

Looking at financial services jobs, London also proved to be the biggest hiring hub, although recruitment activity there decreased by 4% year over year in 2019. On the other hand, North East England posted the fastest growth in financial services vacancies, which were up by 32% year over year. Roles also increased by 31% in Yorkshire and the Humber.

Consumer finance organisations drove job growth in the sector, with finance vacancies in that sector up by 36% year over year. HSBC was the company with the most hiring, although Lloyds Banking Group posted the biggest annual increase with job openings up by 87%.
