UK – Average salaries up 8% despite uncertainty following general election

21 July 2017

Despite uncertainty following last month’s general election, average salaries in the UK saw an increase of 8.1% in June, when compared to the previous year, according to data from UK-based recruitment software provider Recruitive.

The figures show many cities across the UK also saw an increase in salary in June, compared to the previous year, including Birmingham (2.12%), Manchester (1.85%) and Leeds (3.10%). Furthermore, sectors such as distribution and retail saw upticks in salaries, year-on-year, with a growth of 9.8% and 9.6% respectively.

“The positive salary growth indicates that businesses across the nation are still working hard to attract candidates to their vacancies,” Carla Fern, Operations Director at Recruitive, said. “With this in mind we expect to see a higher volume of applications over the coming months and we have already begun to see an increase in the number of enquiries from companies looking to improve their recruitment process.”

Figures from the Office of National Statistics showed that the unemployment rate stood at 4.5%, its lowest figure since 1975.
