UK – Amazon workers say they don’t take toilet breaks for fear of being punished

16 April 2018

Amazon fulfilment centre staff are in fear of using the toilet in case they miss their targets or they are disciplined over the time used, reports Business Insider UK with survey data from worker campaign platform Organise.

The survey of Amazon workers found that almost three-quarters of fulfilment centre staff are afraid of using the toilet in case they miss their targets.

Meanwhile, in an undercover investigation by The Sun, a fulfilment centre in Staffordshire was found to have workers who use a "toilet bottle" system in place because the toilet was reportedly too far away. Amazon workers used the bottles because they did not want to get disciplined over 'idle time' and feared losing their jobs over using the toilet.

In a statement, Amazon commented, “Amazon ensures all of its associates have easy access to toilet facilities which are just a short walk from where they are working. Amazon provides a safe and positive workplace for thousands of people across the UK with competitive pay and benefits from day one.”
