Thailand – Government to recruit up to 42,000 temporary workers for the seafood sector (Undercurrent News)

04 September 2018

Thailand’s government is stepping up its recruitment efforts which includes implementing an agreement with Myanmar’s government to recruit an extra 42,000 temporary workers for the seafood sector by November 2018, reports Undercurrent News. Thailand is reportedly facing a shortage of approximately 53,000 migrant workers for its seafood sector. The Thai government said it is extending permits for current workers for up to two years and setting up "one-stop" service centres in 22 provinces to aid in registration, allowing migrant workers with passports or temporary passports to register by 15 November. The government added that the efforts aim to attract "ten times more workers" than before. The hired workers will be protected under Thailand's "Royal Ordinance on the Management of Foreign Workers Employment". Thailand’s fishing sector has faced criticism over allegations of forced labour and human rights abuses but the government has sought to improve working conditions through new laws.
