Spain’s Christmas hiring campaign to generate fewer contracts this year

21 November 2023

Randstad Spain predicts that the upcoming Christmas campaign will generate more than 347,000 new hires in the country, 3.5% less than last year's campaign, when 359,950 new job contracts were signed.

As far as sectors are concerned, the hospitality industry will be the only one that will see its volume of contracts increase compared to last year's campaign, with a 31% increase. Overall, contracts for the hospitality industry will surpass 83,700.

For its part, the commerce sector will see the number of contracts fall by 17.6%, to almost 96,000 contracts. The decline will be more moderate in the case of logistics and transportation, which will experience a decrease in jobs from 179,730 to almost 168,000 currently, that is, 6.7% less.

According to Randstad, these figures were impacted by last year’s labour reforms.

“The Christmas campaign will be somewhat less dynamic due to the increase in prices of goods and services, which is already impacting the purchasing capacity of households,” Valentín Bote, director of Randstad Research in Spain said. “By sectors, we will see a boost in hiring in the hospitality sector, which rebounds along with the increase in foreign and local tourism, and slight reductions in commerce and transportation that are more subject to the current economic situation in our country.”
