08 March 2018

Women workers in Spain have gone on strike today, International Women’s Day, protesting gender inequality and sexual discrimination, reports BBC News. Work was halted as part of a 24-hour strike organised by the 8 March Commission and backed by unions and some of Spain's top women politicians including the mayors of Madrid and Barcelona. Among the effects of the protests include the cancellation of hundreds of trains. Hundreds of marches were also organised with the slogan "if we stop, the world stops.” A survey from El Pais showed that 82% of Spaniards supported the strike. The protests also demanded equal pay for men and women. Eurostat figures showed the gender pay gap in Spain stood at 14.2% in 2016.
