Spain – Over 1,000 Amazon workers plan to strike over wages and rights (Reuters)

13 March 2018

More than 1,000 Amazon workers in Spain plan to stage their first strike with a two-day walkout to protest what unions claim are efforts to reduce employees’ rights, reports Reuters. The strike was called by Comisiones Obreras (CCOO), Spain’s largest union, as well as other unions. The union claims that Amazon aims to block salary increases, cut wages and reduce payments for those working weekends or holidays as part of a new contract agreement. The walkouts are set to take place on 21 and 22 March and will include 1,100 workers at Amazon’s San Fernando logistic warehouse on the outskirts of Madrid. Amazon Spain stated that it has held direct talks with the unions and said that it offers a competitive pay structure. The strikes are similar to last year’s protests by German and Italian Amazon workers who went on strike during Black Friday.
