According to a new survey carried out among 1,083 employees by Randstad Espana, the Spanish subsidiary of Randstad Holding, 54% of Spanish workers admit that they need to find a second job in order to make ends meet. This compares to only 10% of workers last year.
Short-time working schemes and the absence of extra working hours have reduced incomes of Spanish workers and have also given them the time to work in a second job.
Most people interviewed are looking for a weekend job or a part-time job, others have decided to work during their Summer holidays in order to boost their incomes.
Most people interviewed were happy to consider any type of work as a second job. The majority prefers positions which require semi-skilled qualifications in the services sector such as telephone operators or customer service attendants.
49% have already had a second job once in their lives. 58% of foreign workers have had two jobs compared to 47% of Spanish nationals interviewed.
The number of people looking for a second job varies greatly by region from 77% in Andalusia to 30% in the Basque Country.
